Drakes Bay Family Farm – Lunny Ranch. The Lunny Family has produced high quality farm products on the Lunny Ranch in Marin County for most of the twentieth century, and they continue to do so into the twenty-first. Today, the Lunnys raise Marin County’s only certified organic beef herd and Marin County’s only certified Grass-Fed beef herd on Marin County’s first and largest certified organic pastures for livestock production.

By managing this herd as a “closed” herd, the Lunnys have eliminated the potential of importing diseases with purchased cattle from out of the area. The ranch is situated in the heart of the Point Reyes National Seashore, with the Pacific Ocean bordering one side of the ranch and Drake’s Estero bordering the opposite side. This moist, marine environment provides for excellent pasture quality. The winter supplementary feed provided to their herd is certified organic grass haylage produced by the Lunnys on their ranch.

Ultrasound has become an important component of their herd management. This technology provides “inside” information that is invaluable to the grass finisher. Rib eye area, intramuscular fat %, back fat thickness, a tenderness score and a stress score are all recorded for each and every calf. These traits are all highly heritable (except the stress score), making more rapid genetic gain possible in their closed herd. Most importantly, over the years this information has been giving the Lunnys the information needed to project the likelihood that the individual animal will finish well on grass and provide a wonderful eating experience.

Beef is all USDA inspected and vacuum packaged. Quarters and halves are also available by pre-orders.
