Gelder Farm raises beef cows, broiler chickens, turkeys and eggs all on open pasture. No grain for the beef cows, only for the chickens and turkeys.
During the growing season, the beef cows are rotational moved twice a day, later once a day. They are given sections based on what they can eat in that time period. We also grow our own alfalfa hay to feed them in the off season on open pasture.
Broiler chickens are raised in chicken tractors on pasture for their safety from the foxes we have fed in the past. They are fed a broiler mix from a local Mill which uses local corn. They start with daily moves and later twice a day moves.
Layer chickens live in a mobile chicken coup on pasture. They have an area approximately 2500 square feet with a netted electric fence for safety. During the day they are let out of the netted area to roam freely across the pasture. Their area is moved weekly and their coup is cleaned weekly.
Turkeys are raised the same as the layers and moved weekly with the layers. We take orders in June for finished turkeys for Thanksgiving.
