Head Waters Farm consists of 250 acres of fields and forest located in the high country of Newbury and Topsham, Vermont with striking views of the White Mountains to the East.
We have two maple orchards totaling 2,500 taps, which produce sap that flows through pipelines to our sugar house. There it is boiled over a wood-fired evaporator until it reduces to syrup. This year we produced 726 gallons of syrup, which we send by U.S. mail to customers in all corners of the United States.
We also produce lamb and beef in the most natural and sustainable way we know how. Our animals receive no grain, hormones, antibiotics nor chemical dewormers. We have been raising Katahdin sheep for 25 years so we have had plenty of experience growing tender, delicious lamb. For five years we have been developing a herd of Devon cattle. This breed does very well on a grass only diet, producing lean, tasty, tender beef. Our animals are slaughtered and butchered at a small, state inspected facility we chose because of the humane treatment they provide the animals and because of the skill of their butchers.
We rotationally graze our cattle and sheep together in what we call the “flerd” – part flock of sheep and part herd of cattle. Every few days we move them to a new pasture, a system which is good for both the animals and the land. In winter the animals are fed hay we produced the previous summer and have a choice of being inside the barn or out in the weather.
Please consider buying a whole lamb or a quarter of a beef at what we think you will find to be very reasonable prices. We don’t ship meat as we prefer to sell locally, however we can sometimes meet you half way. If you come to the farm to pick up your order, we may be able to give you a tour.
